Rail Fence Baby Quilt

I finished quilting the Rail Fence Baby Quilt for my friend. This is my first Free Motion Quilting and I feel terribly scared to do this again. This is a new challenge to me. I need more practice to master this skill.
Look at the stitches. I feel so sad because it looks ugly and messy. My friend saw it and she liked it and thanked me for making this for her baby. I want to make a new baby quilt for her but she insist to receive this one. :D

I want to set "Mastering FMQ skill" as my 2013 goal.
Happy New Year!

  1. I have one little square about 8" that I tried doing some Free Motion Quilting on. It was only a muslin sandwich, but it seemed to work fairly well. I haven't tried it on any real pieces yet because I've been busy with Christmas stuff. The one thing I've heard from many quilters that do FMQ is to practice. I think your baby quilt turned out just fine for your first try!

  2. Way to go giving it a try! It looks good and you'll only get better with practice. Merry Christmas!

  3. I'm sure the baby doesn't care what the stitches look like. It's a great gift that will be well used. Congrats on the finish!

  4. I've always loved the simplicity of the rail fence and the interesting design it creates.

  5. Don't be disappointed! The finished quilt looks good! No-one but a quilter looks close-up at the stitching. The rest of the world looks at the overall design and the colours.

I think all quilters are disappointed with their first attempts, but don't give up, quilting improves with practice.

  6. Your friend loves it because you made it for her with love. I look back on my first FM quilt and its one of my favourites because its a reminder of how far I have come. I did an evening FM quilting course and it opened my eyes and taught me so much, and all it takes from there is practice and time. Your quilt is lovely.

  7. fmq takes practice. I should know because I have been doing it each month. I think you did a great job and your friend loves the quilt and I know the baby will love carrying that quilt around.
